Bigbang return to Casbah 3/1

“A nice blend of flowing, Tom Petty/Neil Young-esque balladry and explosive ‘70s bar-band shake, Edendale is a vintage slice of freedom rock, with hot licks and angelic harmonies framing the warm, yearning vocals of frontman Oystein Greni. Bang on!” — Amoeba Records, February 2, 2010

In support of their new release Edendale, Norway’s Bigbang return to San Diego for a 21+ show on Monday, March 1 at Casbah (2501 Kettner Blvd.) Doors open at 8:30 pm. The Hounds Below also perform. Tickets are $7 at the door. For additional show information, please visit http://www.casbahmusic.com.

Having gone platinum in Norway where it was released last year, Edendale has been garnering rave reviews and gathering strength at college radio in the U.S. Trade magazine Music Connection praised it as “instantly and relentlessly catchy blues-based, guitar driven rock & roll” and Metromix NY declared the band “just an accent apart from the American Top 40″.

On the college radio front this week, 15 stations charted the album, and 6 of them were Priority-1 stations! Spins came from WITR (Rochester NY), KXCI (Tucson AZ), WCLH (Scranton PA), WRFL (Lexington KY), WDBM (Lansing MI) and KWVA (Eugene OR), among others.

“Norway’s Greatest Live Band” Bigbang has been added to the lineups at SXSW in Austin, TX this March 17 – 21 and at NX35 in Denton TX, March 11-14. The band will perform at NX35 Saturday, March 13th. Time is yet to be determined. Note that Saturday night single night wristbands have sold out, so folks wishing to attend would need to buy the $65 All Access wristband.

“Featuring material from the band’s… album Edendale, the band proved itself in sonic touch with classic acts like Cream and Neil Young & Crazy Horse while also tapping into the same modern-day current that flows through new heroes like Band of Horses and My Morning Jacket. The band’s songs are as compelling as its stage presence…” – Robert Kinsler, OC Register (report from NAMM live set)

Bigbang has been dubbed “Norway’s Greatest Live Band” and is major force in the Norwegian music scene. During the past two years, the band has spent time focusing on the American market. Based in Southern California, they criss-crossed the country playing intimate gigs and promoting their North American debut, 2008’s From Acid to Zen.

The band’s new CD Edendale (Oglio Records/Grand Sport Records), released January 19, has strong ties to Bigbang’s adopted home. Front man and founder Øystein Greni explains: “The area of Los Angeles today known as Echo Park/Silverlake used to be called Edendale around the time when the silent movie industry took off. Charlie Chaplin’s studio -now a storage place – is on my block, and Walt Disney’s first film studio was across the street from the local Trader Joes. In Europe we tend to romanticize things and people from the past; here it’s all about moving on to the next project.”

Released internationally last year to stellar sales, the Stateside version of Edendale includes three new exclusive tracks and was co-produced at Los Angeles’ legendary Sound City Studios by Bigbang’s founder Øystein Greni and Greg Richling (Wallflowers and Black Flag).

NX35 is a walkable, 4-day music conference programmed in Courthouse Square at the heart of Denton, Texas’ central business district. Bigbang joins a lineup of more than 120 bands set to play, including Flaming Lips, Midlake and The Black Angels; and a discussion with legendary producer/musician/journalist Steve Albini. For $65, patrons can get a NX35 All-Access Cloth Wristband that grants entry to all NX35 daytime and nighttime programming. A Single Night All-Venue Tyvek Wristband costs $20. Wristbands are now on sale for the NX35 Music Conferette at nx35.com.
